...you to make a mate your muse

Jennifer Wood like...to talk about wonderful exhibitions, or great new bands or some inspiring piece of work I’ve recently seen. But to be frank, am not off to a great start, as I haven’t seen anything recently that is worth writing home or indeed blogging about. And it’s not for the want of trying. However I have found inspiration in one of the most unexpected places. In something that all of us can share, and probably never consider as a source of great creativity.

I was asked to go see a band recently at King Tuts in Glasgow, a £6 ticket for a ‘mate of mates’ band. And another friend asked if I would come to her exhibition opening of a collection of her work, which I’ve seen many times before. I ambled along to both and discovered average tunes, and the art works looking as smart as ever. But having a chat with both friends after about their work was what changed it for me. Hearing the stories of how they wrote songs on buses, and in between jobs. How artwork was produced using money that should have been spent on rent and food. Hearing the stories of how they actually got off their arse and did something made me look at their work in a whole new light. I didn’t just hear another guitar band; I heard something that took hundreds of hours to make. I didn’t just see a wall of photographs; I saw agonising hours of hand printing, and days of deliberation on composition. And it’s made me look at the other people around me and see what they have achieved. I urge you to try it. You’ll find something in everyone.

But maybe it’s just me; maybe I haven’t taken the time to listen to my friend’s stories. But when was the last time you sat down and really listened to your mate who travelled through Peru.

So the next time you are quick to judge a new band, or a grad student’s art show, or dismiss your mate who completed Call of Duty 6 in a weekend, ask yourself what have you done lately?

...to get back to blogging.

Hello. yes I have been off the radar somewhat. I can fill you in though and I shall in quick style. Since I last blogged I have been working fulltime for Family Advertising as Creative in their diverse creative department. Without a permanent partner in crime I played both the part of Copywriter and Art director and had lots fun and strange looks from Leithers as I muttered to myself in local coffee shops. I worked on some great briefs, tripled my skill set and even picked up a couple of awards along the way. But alas it has come to an end. The recession finally took a bite out of Family and I unavoidably find myself redundant.

So as I assess my options, take stock on a great year and get over turning 30 last week, I once again step into the unknown in this crazy industry and hope to find a Jen sized space to fill…

Creative development

The last 3months have come and gone rather quickly and proved to be very fruitful. Euan and I have worked our way through a range of crazy briefs, but alas our partnership has ended, for now at least.

Euan is heading off to pastures new and no doubt I’ll be reading about his exploits soon enough.

Meanwhile I have been given the opportunity to stay on fulltime with Family and work in conjunction with the existing creatives. I will be working along side the resident bad joke tellers CD’s David and Kevin, the fabulous designer Michael, Mark the accident-prone designer/creative and Achilles the quietest dog in the world. I very excited about this opportunity to work within a more fluid environment. I’ll be changing partners to suit briefs, exploring ideas on my own and working hard to develop my own skills as well the agencies client list.

Jen and Euan

Some exciting news from my adventures in ADland.

I have been given a 3month freelance contract with my new writer Euan. We have been trying to build a book together around our current freelance work but it has been very difficult. But this offer has been made on the strength of our individual books. It will allow us to test our partnership within a real agency and sets us a realistic deadline to build a good book together. It's with the agency Family, in Leith Edinburgh. They have stuck their neck out with this offer and we plan to work very hard for them and push ourselves. So it's heads down and back into the frying pan from Monday.

I plan to run a blog of the next 90days. I think it will be interesting to document the birth of a team. I will post a link as soon as I decide on a name.

Family friends

My recent adventures in Adland have landed me back amongst familiar faces but in different spaces. Family Advertising, the agency I was first employed with, have given me desk space within their new plush offices in Leith. Therefore giving me a base to work from, other creatives to converse with and an endless supply of coffee.
I think this proves that the creative industry in Edinburgh is a community and bonds are created that those who work in suits in high offices will never understand.

Prostate Scotland Viral and movie

Today sees the launch of the Prostate Scotland charity website, something I helped create within my last position at the Union agency. Along with my creative partner we wrote and shot the viral and the longer information movie with sporting celebrities Craig Levin, Chris Paterson and Grant Stott.

Welcome

Hello, and welcome to my folio. I have posted a range of work that I have produced over the last few years within advertising agencies in Scotland. Please have a look, leave a comment, advice or anything you would like to say that you think I would like to hear.

At this time I am currently looking for a new creative opportunity and welcome enquires.
